Ready…Not Ready…Ready for Winter – A Poem

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The leaves of the hostas have all been cut back,
Removing slugs’ blankets and revealing their eggs,
So frogs and toads in the garden can enjoy a fall snack.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
Soil’s been mounded over the bases of roses.
To keep roots protected from harsh winter weather.
Dead roses come springtime, a gardener opposes.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The leaves have been shredded and piled in a corner.
They’ll turn into leaf mold in a few months or so
To use in the garden next spring when it’s warmer.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The hoses have been drained so now they won’t burst.
When temps freeze and thaw and freeze once again
With water inside, now that is the worst.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The tools have been cleaned and all put away.
The trowels, the knives, the cultivators and saws
Have had all dirt removed and are neatly displayed.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The pruners have been cleaned and their blades nicely sharpened.
They’ll wait, in their spaces, until they are needed
In spring when we can’t wait to get the new season started.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The lawn has been mowed for the very last time.
The blades have been cleaned, the gas has been drained.
The mower heads to the shed for some winter downtime.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The pump’s in the pond and deicer plugged in.
The koi are slowing and heading toward the bottom
Where they’ll sleep for the winter, barely raising a fin.

It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.
The pots have been planted with lush greens and berries,
And pine cones and branches and then lit with some lights.
Now ready for winter – oh my, they look merry!

But wait…

It’s NOT okay that winter will soon come this way.
I have more weeds to pull and mulch in a pile.
There’s always a little something more I could do.
To give the beds and borders a little more style.

No matter the time I am given before snow arrives,
I will never be ready to tuck the garden away
To just sit by the fire and map next year’s plans.

Well…sitting by the fire with seed catalogs sounds fun.
It’s okay that the winter will soon come this way.

Garden with me!
